Coursework: rock and rolling with ambient light
For the next few weeks I'll be doing some re-energizing and learning in the form of a ten week course on advanced fashion lighting organized by Vancouver Photo Workshops. On the surface it attracted me with the chance to get some experience on some big assed lighting gear (along with getting some tips on not blowing it up) but also it will be great just being able to mix it up in good group of other photographers.
Speaking of mixing it up, our second session was meant to make us recognize lighting that already exists with some old fashioned run and gun in and around the warehouse district where VPW makes its home. Wayne, our fabulous instructor, provided the models (local musicians I'll credit later when I can dig out my notes) and pointed out some locations. We did a circuit of inside and outside.
This exercise was more about seeing with our eyes and taking advantage of what was there. Being smart with existing locations. This shot was in the second garage we were supposed to shoot in as we got kicked out of the first. People with cameras + musicians = trouble!
More to come. Rock and roll, baby!
