Dani in the Woods

Dani in the Woods
Thanks to Dani I have my first shot up from that nearly water-logged shoot I mentioned from Sunday.
Flare-aholic
One of the first commenters on this photo on Flickr mentioned that it was a good example of a tight flare shot that didn't look contrived. I wouldn't actually be annoyed by a contrivance since this shot actually had some thought put into it combined with the magical appearance of the sun. But thanks anyway. I'm a sucker for flare, especially when it is as pretty as through my Carl Zeiss Flektogon 20mm f/2.8.
Lighting info
The key light here is from my Alien Bees B800 through a beauty dish. Dani is young and her skin is great -- which you should see clearly in the other shots to come -- and the beauty dish again gives nice contrasty light. I believe at this point in the shoot the beauty dish had the diffusion sock still on it, so it is somewhat diffused, yet still has more direct light. The beauty dish is set high and pointing down on her head from slightly left.
My shooting partner for this segment, Ian, set up two rims. One of them you can see clearly is giving edge definition to Dani's right. He set it up with a shoot through umbrella that makes the light source larger, filling part of her dress. The other rim you can see giving a slight shine on her left side. In other shots it also served to light some of the tree.
Photoshop griping
My big issue was that I had to do some clean up of unwanted flare spots. I will spare you the details but I had to do a lot of masking, cloning, painting, hue and sat work. There was not a lot I could do to avoid it because of the type of shot I got here. A frame later, no spot but then the flare wasn't as pretty nor was her pose what I wanted.
