Evaluating scanning software today

Submitted by keithloh on Sat, 2010-03-20 16:54.

Today, I will be evaluating more scanner software in order to see if I can get more out of my Canoscan 8400F. I'll begin by installing and trying Hamrick Software's Vuescan.

Well, that was easy. Vuescan didn't detect my scanner.

Next: Silverfast.

Foiled again: No XP64 compatible version.

Oh well, time to install Win7.

I'll revisit this when I finally install Win7, Frank.

Hey Keith... I'd love to chat with you about your findings on this. I have a Canon Canoscan 8400F as well, and I've played around with both Vuescan and Silverfast before, but not recently.

I was looking at the two again just now, and I admit that Silverfast really seems to be pushing the technology edge. I love that they seem to have developed what looks like the ultimate raw capture format that can let you go through all your old film and capture it with the best possible dynamic range and infrared dust and scratch info, and then process that archival format later, at your leisure.

Not that their full Archival Suite plus maybe a calibration target or two would be exactly affordable.

I have boxes and boxes of 20 to 30 year old negatives with significant personal and sentimental value that need archiving.

Oh and yeah... I ran into the compatibility wall too. I've gone Win7 across the board but there's no 64-bit support for this scanner whatsoever. Lame.

Frank
