Medium Res Scan

$70 Medium Format Lesson

$70 Medium Format Lesson

After receiving my last batch of film back with low-res scans I decided to try my next batch with medium-res. This is the best of the bunch that came back -- all during a phase when I was trying out many different B&W film. Unfortunately, it also came before I realized that my Ansco bellows had all kinds of light leaks. I know why I didn't think it had light leaks before; it's because in inside shots like this there isn't a lot of light coming from above.

The Scan

The dimensions are twice what low-res were (2k by 2k pixels) but still lower than a RAW file (3.5k by 3.5k) shot from my 30D. When I read that some people are getting 7200px by 7200 px scans I'm sure I can do better. I have other quibbles that I'm not prepared to blame the scanner for as well such as the vertical marks. As for the resolution: I'm still not getting the advantage of medium format over 35mm or over my 30D because of the scan. Since medium res scans are upwards of $15 here, it looks more and more that I will invest in a nice flatbed scanner if I am to continue shooting 120. (I named these two "$70 Medium Format Lesson" because my latest price for scanning and processing 3 rolls of 120 came to that).

Kodak BW400CN

What I like is the film itself. This is Kodak BW400CN. I like the blacks. I like the overall tone. I like the grain. I like the latitude. The only thing falling down on this shot is me fumbling at the Ansco.
