Top Lighting Cloud lighting diagram

Submitted by keithloh on Tue, 2009-11-03 21:12.

Here's the lighting diagram for the baby shoot I did last week. There's no side view of it so just imagine that the 'cloud' and large softbox held up by the boom is a foot above head height.

Unless you have a very good boom I would not recommend it being held like that. In the previous VPW class that inspired me to try a smaller budget version of the lighting their softbox was instead held up by the cross beam of a background stand (of course sandbagged for greater security). I don't have an extra background stand so I had to use my boom.

With top lighting schemes like this the power of using a pack and head setup instead of a monolight becomes clearer. With the pack and head system you do your power adjustments in the pack, which stays on the ground. With the monolight you have to get up on the step ladder to do your power tweaks on the head. And if you are at all nervous about shaking your setup and sending it crashing down on your clients, maybe you need to look into pack and head. The other advantage is that the head on a pack and head system is usually smaller and lighter.

I should mention that I tried to set up a kicker to get some definition into their dark clothes but it never worked. In the future I will try a hair light from top and behind them to try and splash some light on the shoulders.
